We are approaching the end of May and many club seasons are coming to a close. Are you a senior without a scholarship, or a junior whose senior year is rapidly approaching? If you are a senior, you need to pick up the phone and call me right this second! I’ll even give you my number in this blog. (714) 323-8088 If you are a junior there is no need to panic, but you do need to learn to be proactive beginning now! You may be starting to realize that scholarship offers don’t just happen for student athletes, even when you are receiving recruiting letters and emails! Sure, some might tell you that it does, but the reality is that student athletes who are successful in the recruiting process had to work for it. Just because you don’t have an offer doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough to play in college. That is a myth! What it means is that you need to set yourself up for success and create a plan. Many of you may be asking yourself what kind of plan you need to be successful in the recruiting process?
Well, lets start with some things you CAN be doing to help with your search. Do you have a potential major? If you do, start looking for colleges that offer your major that are an academic fit. What is an academic fit you ask? Schools that are a close match to your cumulative GPA and test scores. Believe it or not, you are actually getting paid to go to high school right now. You don’t realize it, but you are…your grades and test scores determine how much money you receive from colleges in scholarships. See, most student athletes don’t play Division 1 sports where a full athletic scholarship may be available. There are thousands of opportunities available outside of Division 1. So, start your search with schools that are an academic fit who offer your major. Let me also give you a hint here; student athletes who do not do their research and who settle for a program out of desperation, they come home after their first year and then they call me to help them get out of their mess. So if a school doesn’t offer your major or a potential path to get you to your end goal, drop them now!
Don’t get caught up in the name game either! Just because you don’t recognize the name of a school doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good school. Have you narrowed down some geographical areas and weather conditions that you are comfortable with? I know living in sunny Southern California is wonderful, but your college experience is an adventure. So don’t discount places that are out of the state. Yes, it’s scary to think about leaving your family but understand there are thousands of opportunities outside of where we live. Do your research. Spend some time on YouTube, and on the various educational websites like collegeboard. This is where the recruiting process can be overwhelming, and this is why many families see the benefit of using My Recruiting Solutions.
