Recruiting Tip: What to expect at college volleyball camps?
Is your student athlete nervous about her upcoming college volleyball camp? It’s normal to feel a bit anxious, as you have more than likely chosen a camp at a college that is high on your list. Most camps begin with doing skills and drills. They will provide instruction on the technique they use in their program, and see how coachable you are. Depending on whether you are at a one day camp, versus a multiple day camp, they will spend at least half on their time on skills training. It’s very important to stay engaged, make eye contact with coaches who are instructing you, and have a positive attitude, even if you are frustrated. It’s ok if you struggle, but you want to work hard to adapt without having a bad attitude.
Typically a camp will end with competition. You’ll be put on a team to play. Coaches are watching your footwork, body language, and paying attention to whether you made any adjustments that were taught throughout the camp. Be a good teammate! You may not be happy with the team you are on, but it’s out of your control. So encourage each other and have a good time!
At the end of camp, they may open it up to questions. If this is the case, you need to be prepared, so you have a lasting impression on the coaching staff. I have included a list of questions I usually share with my athletes on their campus tours. Have 3 questions ready so if someone asks one of the questions you asked, you have another one in mind, and you don’t feel deflated. Click here for questions.
Following up after camp:
After the camp, take the time to write a handwritten thank you note! Be sure you get the correct spelling of everyone’s name who worked the camp and make the note personal. Your note should be genuine, and personal. What did you take away from the camp? Do you feel this is the perfect fit for you? If so, why?! Your handwritten note should be 6-8 sentences long. Very few athletes send a handwritten note, and this is definitely a way to stand out!
