Recruiting Tip: Honesty is the best policy!

As I have traveled through the country this season, I have literally spoken to hundreds of college coaches (Check out my Instagram account…username Vballrecruiter). At tournaments, we gather around to evaluate and talk. I am always surprised when I hear how athletes misrepresent the truth. It’s unfortunate, because the dishonesty lands you in hot water with coaches. I can’t stress the importance of being genuine in all of your communication.  If you are 5’9″ with your shoes on, then you are 5’9″ not 6’0″. If you touch 9’5″, you touch 9’5″ not 10′.

As you navigate through the process, it’s natural for your wants and needs to change. It’s also very common to see the needs of coaches change in an instant! When you are honest, sincere and genuine in your communication it goes a long way with a college coach. They are far more likely to share how positive there experience has been in there interactions with you. Why is this important? It’s critical because volleyball is a very small community. These coaches move from program to program, and when they have had a positive experience with you, they are far more likely to keep your contact information. They will also share your information with another college coach who has a need that you fit. So even if you aren’t making progress with your “dream”school, it doesn’t end there. You just never know where you will end up or how this journey will unfold.

This is a very emotional process. I can understand wanting to do whatever you can to stand out from the competition and be evaluated by college coaches. It’s just important to be honest in your communication. One of the reasons I have been successful in helping so many athletes through there journey is by being honest. I also travel to Qualifiers, and major recruiting tournaments to ensure my clients gain exposure. These days it’s extremely important to have an advocate. The goal is to streamline the process, focus on the programs that are realistic, and help you find the perfect fit!
