Kara Hill’s College Recruiting Tip of the Day: There is more to college than athletics!

Doing the research on the community around the college is a critical step in the recruiting process.  I highly recommend you use Yelp to take a look at the local college hangouts, and work to get to know the student athletes on the team to discover where they spend their time.  You need to be able to visualize yourself becoming a part of the community.  Often, the focus is so much on athletics and you do not take into consideration that there is more to your college experience.

When you schedule your college visits, be sure to take an extra day to explore the communities surrounding the area.  If religious services are an important part of your life, talk to the athletes on the team and see if they attend services at any of the local churches.  I worked with a student athlete who wanted to find a program where there were other Christians on the team that shared her faith.

Take a look at your life the way you live it now.  I’m sure your sport takes up a significant amount of your time, but what else do you enjoy doing?  To make your transition easier into college, try to find similarities in the college communities you are interested in pursuing.  Be sure to do the research on the crime rate and the areas to avoid.  Are you beginning to see how there is more to college than the athletics?   For more information on college recruiting, contact Kara Hill at kara@myrecruitingsolutions.com.
