To be successful in the recruiting process you have to call college coaches! It’s a must for a variety of reasons. For one, have you ever played for a coach who you didn’t get along with? Could you imagine playing for this coach for 4 straight years. Yikes! That would be miserable right? Most student athletes get scared to call coaches throughout the recruiting process. It’s not easy but there are questions I recommend asking to help this be a success:
1. Ask a coach what a day in the life of one of his athletes is like both during the season and in the off season? When you start with a question such as this one, it gives you the student athlete a chance to take a deep breath and listen to what the coach has to say. Most coaches have a lot they want to share with you.
2. What are the academic requirements to be considered for their program? Ask yourself, is this a school I should be looking at? Do they offer your major? If you have an interest in a major that is not widely offered you will want to consider whether you want to spend additional time in school to complete your education? Let me give you an example here, let’s say you are considering Biology and Marine Biology as a major, you should be working off a list of schools that offer Marine Biology. Even if you are leaning towards Biology as a whole, in the off chance you change your mind you will want to have the option to major in Marine Biology because you are interested in it. Don’t look at schools that don’t offer your major. It’s best you are doing your homework ahead of time so if a coach is talking to you about a potential major, the school offers the actual major you are considering. The conversation can turn real awkward when they don’t offer what you want to study. Make sense?
Understand this, if you don’t call coaches you are not likely to be recruited! It’s one of the biggest recruiting mistakes student athletes and their families make! This is an interview process. I’m sure you are thrilled the coach is interested in you, but this has to be a mutual fit! So you have got to call and begin building a relationship with a coach in order to get an idea if it’s going to work for you. This is a big decision. You will be investing a lot of time to play for this program, make sure it’s a program you LOVE!
