Recruiting Tip: College Sand Programs & Scholarships

Recruiting Tip: College Sand Programs & Scholarships

As college sand teams are popping up all over the country, and the sport is exploding, many student athletes are asking how they can be recruited and earn a scholarship to play sand in college.  You first need to identify the list of colleges who are offering sand volleyball.  I have included an updated list at the bottom of this post.

The recruiting process is overwhelming and intense.   Trying to get recruited to play in the sand is a challenge due to the amount of programs and scholarships available.  You need to be very proactive in your communication with college coaches, and send a lot of video.  As we are coming into the sand season for juniors, getting exposure is key.  I would recommend trying out for High Performance, and competing in several tournaments throughout the spring and summer.  The college coaches for sand want to see you compete in at least 18 tournaments a season against tough competition.  If you do not make the cut for High Performance, you should definitely consider joining a club to get more experience.  It will also be easier to find a partner.

As an indoor player, you are bound to run into scheduling issues with high school and club.  Some tough decisions will need to be made on your part.  I suggest having a meeting with your sand and indoor coaches to keep them in the loop with your desire to get more experience in the sand and try to get recruited.  You need to plan out your spring and summer to the best of your ability with practices and tournaments so you can provide a copy to both coaches.  Communication is a major factor in your success!

To be recruited, much like indoor you need to put together a short introduction and always include video!  If you do not send video, do not expect a serious response, or a response at all.  Make sure to identify what you are wearing in the video as well so the coaches can identify you.  This should not be over produced with arrows and music.  Music takes away from what is going on on the court.  The coaches want to see and hear how well you communicate with your partner.  You will need to share several highlight reels throughout your season to show your growth and progress in the sand.  Do not create a highlight reel playing against a team that you have blown away!  There are not always a lot of rally’s in the sand, but you should definitely try to share a few in each reel.  I listed a YouTube link of the McNamara twins I worked with who earned a scholarship to UCLA.

For guidance on how to be successful in the recruiting process, email [email protected] to set up a free consultation with your family.  As a college volleyball recruiting expert, I work with athletes all over the United States and Canada.  The services my team provides are unique to the rest of the country.  We work with your family step by step through the process until you are signed or committed.  Not only do we have relationships with the college coaches, we travel the country touring college campuses and have knowledge about what each school has to offer.  We spend over 100 hours with your family to ensure you find the perfect fit in a college program.
