One of the biggest complaints athletes have in the recruiting process is the lack of follow up by college coaches. I have an athlete who has tried to reach a coach over the phone for the last 12 months to no avail. You may think the coach isn’t interested in this athlete and she should move on, but what if I told you that this athlete receives 3 handwritten cards a week from the coaching staff and players?! Confusing isn’t it? The program is sending mixed messages. I have another athlete who spent 18 months emailing a college coach and calling a few times a month and received little to no response. She is now committed to this program! The coach said at the end of the day, she knows her follow up is poor but there was no question that my client wanted to be a part of her program. So the bottom line is, persistence wins out every time!
The top college programs in the nation receive a few hundred emails per day! Yes, you read this right per day! So imagine being on the receiving end. It’s a bit daunting and can be a challenge to keep up. These same college programs receive thousands of emails leading up to a major recruiting tournament. It would be fair to say that many of these athletes will be overlooked unless they have been building a relationship with the coach throughout the season.
To be successful in the recruiting process you have to be persistent! The program may not always decide to recruit you, but your persistence will pay off with many programs in the long run. Coaches appreciate your hard work and effort. It sends a positive message to the coaching staff that you are willing to work hard to be seen.
