Recruiting Tip of the Day: Attitude

My Recruiting Solutions Tip of the Day: Have a positive attitude!  The quickest way to be removed from a college coaches recruiting list is to have a bad attitude!  FYI intensity and a bad attitude differ greatly.  This isn’t to say that in a game you should not be focused and intense, this is behavior college coaches can really appreciate.

But hold the drama please, if you make a mistake don’t cause a scene and get down on yourself.  Or if you make a great play, don’t roll your eyes and slap hands with an attitude with your teammate.  Yes, that actually happens and college coaches can see you are putting on a show.  Stay intense, but keep it positive.  No matter the sport you play, you need to express joy and happiness.  Do you like playing?  Being able to “shake it off” after a bad play is a skills that college coaches look for in a student athlete.  I’m sure you realize that when you make a bad play, and you let it get to your head your teammates begin to feel the effects as well.

One of my dear friends is a college coach in Arkansas.  One of the behaviors he looks for in a player is a sign that the student athlete is disrespectful to his/her coach. In fact, one of the ways to get crossed off his list is to grab your water bottle during a timeout PRIOR to reporting to your coach to listen to what he/she may have to say.  So, pay attention to your behavior.  Look at your coach in the eyes during a timeout when they are talking to you.  Have a meeting with your teammates and discuss who can bring water to the huddle during the timeout so you can catch your breath and rehydrate.  Another great tip, have your mom or dad film you during a game and go back to watch it.  Are there any behaviors that you want to change?
