Recruiting in Division III

Recruiting at the Division III level varies greatly from other Divisions.  There are 444 members making it the largest of the three divisions including NYU, Amherst, Bowdain, Middlebury, Williams, and Emory.  These are some of the top academic institutions in our nation.

While you may be unaware that these programs are not able to offer athletic scholarships, many offer academic, need based and third party scholarships.  At MRS, we have several clients who are strong academic students that are searching for more than just a school to play their sport.  Playing sports in college can be the difference maker when it comes to getting into the school of your dreams.

Most of the members in Division III have very small recruiting budgets making it challenging to recruit.  College coaches in Division III are heavily dependent on video.  So you will need to be very proactive in sending them updates with footage throughout your season.  Most of these coaches prefer unedited game footage to really evaluate your skills.  When you send highlight reels it is not an accurate depiction of who you are as a player so keep this in mind when you are sharing your videos.

Also, coaches in Division III are able to call, email, or text any athlete at any time.  In the other Divisions, coaches need to wait until your Junior year of high school before they can email, and your Senior year to call.  It’s important for you to know that you do not have to be a blue chip player to compete in Division III, nor do you have to be one of the top academic students at your school.  Student athletes should strive for a 3.0 GPA or higher to earn academic money.  The higher your GPA the more money you may receive from a school.

Playing your sport in college is truly an incredibly experience!  One that you will treasure for the rest of your life.  Playing in Division III allows you to have a balanced, full college experience.  You can enjoy all the activities that other students of the school are able to enjoy while receiving the many perks of being a student athlete including priority registration.
